Part of KIOSK, Design, Off the Page looks at how publishing allows designers to extend their practices into research, visual culture, theory, and other creative disciplines. Through a collaborative workshop and a public talk, the programme invited participants to reconsider how design engages with history, culture, and the possibilities of the future.
Reimagining The Archive
In collaboration with Artefak Kita and Museum DGI, the speculative design workshop invited participants to explore objects from Museum DGI’s graphic design archive and imagine their possible futures in 2050.
By examining each object's context and visual language, participants transformed archival materials into starting points for new ideas, culminating in a page titled “archive from the future” for a collective publication with Artefak Kita. The workshop offered a fresh perspective on archives, shifting them from records of the past into tools for imagining what lies ahead.
Rethinking Design Today
The programme continued with a talk on Design After Design, a publication series initiated by POST Design Festival in Denmark and published in collaboration with Further Reading.
Featuring Andriew Budiman and Januar Rianto of Further Reading, with Claudia Novreica of Grafis Nusantara as moderator, the discussion explored Andriew’s essay, Fluxipelago: A View of Design from a Ring of Fire Nation. Drawing from the Fluxipelagos research project, the conversation examined how the geographical, ecological, social, and historical conditions of the Indonesian archipelago and Southeast Asia shape the ways humans and nonhumans design, adapt, and relate to one another.
The discussion encouraged a broader understanding of design, moving beyond conventional professional practice to consider the systems, environments, and relationships that inform it.
Beyond The Page
Across both sessions, design emerged as an ongoing conversation between past, present, and future. Through archival exploration, speculative thinking, and critical discussion, Design, Off the Page highlighted the role of publishing as a space for exchanging ideas and discovering new perspectives.
