Playing united André Butzer European Expressionism and American pop culture, painting his way through the artistic and political extremes of the 20th century. With far-reaching role models such as Friedrich Hölderlin, Edvard Munch, Walt Disney and Henry Ford, he developed a fictional universe that revolves around the space colony NASAHEIM. This is where the Peace Siemens lives, a friendly head being who, in the age of mass consumption, combines utopian ideas with economic thinking, while figures such as the Wanderer offer romantic projections and the Shame Man offer mirror images of the political past. This universe gives Butzer's pictures thematic depth. As the "main actors" of the early work, the characters surround the so-called N-House, the home of all colors.Shortly after the turn of the millennium, the colors liberated themselves and developed a life of their own. On large abstract paintings they unfold freely and yet harmoniously balanced. In the supposedly deep black N-Pictures from 2010, Butzer explores the fundamental dimensions and potential of painterly expression at the extreme limits of visibility and of the image. He then moved to California in 2018 and painted outdoors all year round. The new paintings have a radiant freshness, encompass his entire previous work - colors, abstract forms and lines, even figures again - and reveal a mature painterly thinking.For the first time, this book covers the full range of André Butzer's oeuvre between 1999 and 2021. The development of the work takes on an almost musical dynamic - of development, return and new beginnings. Between the panels there are statements by the artist that illuminate the background of the work from his unmistakable perspective, supplemented by photographs from Butzer's archive. The introductory essay by Hans Werner Holzwarth examines the different phases of the work and places the artist's ideas in the larger art-historical context after the actual end of abstraction and figuration. Above all, however, the immaculate, large-format illustrations attest to Butzer's skill as a colourist, which makes him one of the world's most recognized artists of his generation.
