Vibrant colors, organic forms, and a distaste for the geometrically straight line were just a few of the constant traits in the works of Friedensreich Hundertwasser (1928–2000). The painter, architecture doctor, and environmental activist was a nonconformist hero who left a beacon of imagination and ideas in buildings, paintings, manifestos, actions, and more.

Hundertwasser's most famous work is probably the Hundertwasser House in Vienna, a structural synthesis of that vitality and uniqueness that determined the artist's entire life's work. For Hundertwasser, human misery was the result of rational, sterile, monotonous building. He called for a boycott of the modernist paradigm espoused by the likes of Adolf Loos, and instead advocated an architecture of creative freedom and ecological commitment . As an inveterate opponent of straight lines, which he called “godless and immoral”, Hundertwasser was fascinated by spirals and was also inspired by the forms of the Secessionists such as Klimt and Schiele.

This richly illustrated book traces Hundertwasser's style and vision, which applied not only to individual buildings but to society as a whole. From "naked talk" in the 1960s to building projects around the world and alternative designs for society, author Harry Rand explores Hundertwasser's most famous and innovative ideas in a stirring guide to a pioneering 20th-century thinker .
